Horror comedy feels like a proper synthesis of disparate genres - both revel in the grotesque for different reasons, together they coagulate Apr 19, 2017

Terry Crews was the funniest part portraying everything negative about (black) masculinity and exposing it with Wayans' disugised reactions

White Chicks was low-brow as it gets, while possessing a surprisingly classic style of transgender comedy to crass a very modern results.

Yancy and Riser make an interesting point about inverting the minstrel show, strange how it appears in such a perceived low-brow comedy

Watching the trailer for White Chicks makes me question what exactly I'm in for. Scary Movies aren't too great if I remember, except 4 maybe

Delirous feels more dated on a 2nd viewing. Him using "faggot" would not fly today and what was considered shocking long ago is quite tame

Delirious was an obsession of my ex-girlfriend. She forced me to watch it, and aged as it is it holds a fascinating legacy.

Like in the Horror Film class I took last semester, the more I learn about film comedy makes me reassess what culture claims to be low-brow.

Nowell's article makes teen sex films feel like slashers - both successfully conceal feminist readings even in supposed misogynistic films.

Straayer's article reminded me that a film like Some Like It Hot would never fly with today's LGBTQ+ politics, though it's still a classic.

Cuddles was easily the funniest thing about Polyester. Her unwavering optimism contrasting the satirical moping of divine was hilarious.

Polyester's engagement with my senses was commendable, but it was wearying after so many instances of Divine sniffing furiously in her home.

Disgust is not a favorite in my realm of comedy enjoyment, but I'm looking forward to seeing how John Waters actually provokes the viewer.

Big Lebowski features subtle social commentary behind its stoner noir aura and purposely convoluted plot. Coens are great at dark comedy.

Our Companion text from this week discusses dark comedy as political - I would bridge classic to modern with Woody Allen to Noah Baumbach

The fourth wall breaking of BS didn't add much to the film, and stretched a long sketch further.I agree with Roger Ebert's 4 star remarks.

Blazing Saddles improved upon a second viewing. The broadness of the comedy heightens the irony surrounding our racist antagonists, works OK

In terms of comedy Gene Wilder's turn as a drunk lethal gunman is hilarious. Cleavon Little's role is also so funny too, great reactions.

Mel Brooks doesn't really handle racial taboos with any care, which is the charm of BS. Hopefully with another viewing I'll see more in it.

Matthews' reading talks about self-reflexivity, however from my first viewing of Blazing Saddles I found it had the maturity of Space Balls

The satire in "The Women" confused me. Don't know the source material, but for a feminist film of the time it's still rather misogynistic.
